Ricky Stevenson is one of Britain’s brightest athletic hopes across middle distance running and 2011 represents a massive opportunity for him to stake a claim as a leading contender for a place in the London Olympics.
“I don’t know what else I would do with my life it I wasn’t a runner”, says Ricky. “But I only got involved when a school teacher said running would make me a better footballer.”
Since those carefully coded words from the teacher Ricky got a taste for cross country running and has never looked back. Gaining recognition at school level, and then onto National level before developing into a truly international class runner.
Another of Teesside University’s Elite Athletes, Ricky’s career has really took off within the last couple of years; making that transition from potential to tangible results.
He has shown his pedigree on some of the biggest stages before, particularly in beating the likes of Mo Farah at the 2010 Bupa Cross Country race in Edinburgh. This success followed on from a fantastic 2009 season where Ricky was setting PB’s and course records for fun and with the improving confidence to match his ability, he became a feared opponent.
Now, a much fitter, wiser and stronger Ricky than the 2009 version, he is well aware of how important a year 2011 is going to be. The 1500m field is wide open for 2012 with potentially up to ten runners in contention for what would probably only be three places.
But Ricky knows that at his best he his hard to beat and he stands as good a chance as anyone in making one of those coveted places his own.
